Pine tree (Pinus sp.) pollen grains, light micrograph. Each pollen grain, or microspore, has two wings (c-shaped), which are used for wind dispersal. Each pollen grain consists of four cells; two sterile prothallial cells, a tube cell and a generative cell. The tube cell grows into the pollen tube that burrows into the female egg cell. The generative cell divides to form the sperm that fertilise the egg cell. Magnification: x270 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
