Israel Putnam (1718–1790) was an American general in the American Revolution. When he received the call to arms, he was plowing his field. He left the plow in furrow and joined the troops. Putnam has been compared with the Roman Cincinnatus, who left his plow to answer the call to fight for Roman in its early years.
