Winter Aconites Eranthis hyemalis and Snowdrops in woodland early spring
A much-anticipated sight in the winter months, the snowdrop's slim green leaves and bobbing white blooms are iconic. Snowdrops are able to survive the cold winter months and flower so early, because they grow from bulbs. Seeds are produced provided there are insects around to pollinate the flowers, and early emerging queen bumblebees will provide this service when the weather is warm and dry enough. Winter Aconites are a native of southern and eastern Europe, a member of the buttercup family and has bright yellow flowers surrounded by a collar of fringe-like foliage. It resembles its close relative lesser celandine (Ficaria verna). Winter aconite emerges early, blooms and forms foliage, and then goes dormant by late spring, not to be seen again until the following winter and early spring.
