Head 2h times as long as broad, with straight or slightly convex upper profile ; lower jaw projecting ; snout pointed, as long as broad, as long as or a little shorter than eye, which is 3 to 3J times in length of head, and measures at least twice interorbital width or least prseorbital width ; mouth very protractile, praemaxillary processes very long and ex(ending to between orbits ; maxillary extending to below anterior Fiff. Paratilapia culliiira. Type (Tr. Z. S. 1901). fourth of eye ; teeth very small, in 2 series, about 80 in outer series of upper jaw; 2 or 3 series of scales on the cheek, width of scaly part about ^ diameter of eye. Gill-rakers moderately large, 15 on lower part of anterior arch. Dorsal XVI-XVII 10; spines increasing in length to the last, which measures f to J length of head; longest soft rays f to f length of head. Anal III 7-8; third spine a little shorter thon last dorsal. Pectoral a little shorter than head. Ventral reaching vent. Caudal truncate or feebly emarginate. Caudal peduncle 1^ times 2-•^ as long as deep. Scales rather strongly denticulate, 37-40 ^^j^; lateral Pale brownish above, silvery beneath ; a blackish opercular lines 25-29 spot, dorsal and anal edged with black ; 4 or 5 black bars across the caudal; young with black bars across the dorsal.
