Giant Buddha at Sukhothai Phra Achana, Wat Si Chum

Sukhothai Historical Park is a World Heritage Site. Situated in Sukhothai Province it was the first capital of Thailand from 1238 to 1438 The Park is 70 and consists of about 30 ruins of ancient temples. The spectacular Wat Si Chum is famed for a large sitting Buddha image known as Phra Achana with an 11 metre lap width. The image is in the subduing Mara posture. The name "Achana" means one who is not frightened. Phra Achana is sheltered in a vihara whose roof has collapsed leaving only the four walls.
