Jesus Christ, hands tied after his betrayal by Judas Iscariot and arrest by Roman soldiers, is led away by a rope halter around his neck. Medieval Romanesque sculpture on a capital inside the late 1000s or early 1100s AD former Benedictine abbey church at Sorde l'Abbaye, Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France.

Sorde l'Abbaye, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France: Jesus Christ, under arrest with his hands tied and with a halter around his neck, is led away by a Roman soldier following his betrayal by treacherous disciple Judas Iscariot in the Garden of Olives, in this medieval Romanesque sculpture on an interior capital in the former Benedictine abbey church of Saint-Jean de Sordes. This scene from the Holy Week Passion of Christ is among several sculpted capitals inside the church, with the subjects including the Virgin Mary and Christ Child, the Presentation in the Temple and Daniel in the Lion's Den. The choir is paved with a rediscovered mosaic which has been rated the finest example of Romanesque art in the Landes area of southwest France. The Abbey of St John was founded in the 10th century as a stopping-place on the Camino de Santiago or Way of St James Christian pilgrimage route, and built on the site of a 3rd century AD Gallo-Roman villa. The abbey church and abbot's house survived Wars of Religion destruction in the 16th century, but although the monastic buildings were rebuilt, the monks fled during the French Revolution.
