The mountain that overlooks the pitch is called Mount Malpasso, perhaps from Latin Malus Passus, indicating a difficult access to the pass through from the road in the Roman period of one hundred miles, cited the "Itinerarium Antonini", linking Parma in Luni. Great was the importance of that road in Lombard times since for decades the only sure way between the Po Valley and Tuscany.
