GUY'S HOSPITAL: LIFE IN A LONDON HOSPITAL, ENGLAND, 1941 - Alongside the temporary wooden staircase that was built at Guy's Hospital after the original was destroyed in an air raid, is a ramp or chute. This slope enables porters to slide patients with injuries that may be worsened by the jolting which occurs when carried down the stairs down the ramp smoothly.
