GUY'S HOSPITAL: LIFE IN A LONDON HOSPITAL, ENGLAND, 1941 - Alongside the temporary wooden staircase that was built at Guy's Hospital after the original was destroyed in an air raid, is a ramp or chute. This slope enables porters to slide patients with injuries that may be worsened by the jolting which occurs when carried down the stairs down the ramp smoothly. Here we see two porters sliding a patient gently down the chute
