Gibbons caged in horrific conditions in the National Park zoo that is there to protect them; this photograph emphasizes the dichotomy between tourism and the treatment of the animals the tourists wish to see in the Xishuangbanna, National Park, Yunnan province, China. This Park is visited mainly by Chinese tourists but increasingly by Western travelers too. The animals are brutally trained to perform for the tourists. Gibbons, a strictly arboreal creature that moves through the trees using its arms to swing, are trained to caper on the ground standing on their legs. The training is not by repetition and reward. The gibbons are shown in their cage where they live until it is time to perform.
