Natterjack toad Bufo calamita
The Natterjack toad population of the Sefton Coast is known to be approximately 40% of the UK population. The stronghold is at Ainsdale where it breeds in shallow seasonal flooded slack habitat in the dunes. It is romantically known as the Birkdale Nightingale at Southport, but in Bootle where dunes habitats disappeared under the docks and outskirts of the City of Liverpool the Natterjack Toad is now extinct it was known as the Bootle Natterjack toad is afforded considerable legal protection.
