A single poppy in the early morning light

Poppy standing proud with buds and poppies out of focus in the background Travelling along in early summer you will sometimes be captivated by a splash of glorious red as a poppy field appears In a few days a banal field is transformed lifting the spirits to fleetingly bestow this annual phenomenon Up close the poppies reveal their true beauty, delicate translucent petals unfurl like fragile tissue paper, spiky buds and stems stretch to seek the sun, multitudes of seedpods create a thousand abstract shapes inspiring artists and photographers alike At dawn when the light plays through these beautiful ethereal flowers you will find me, camera in hand when peace and tranquillity surrounds, the birds sweetly sing and I am at one with the world The use of the poppy was inspired by the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields". Its opening lines refer to the many poppies that were the first flowers to grow in the churned-up earth of soldiers' graves in Flanders, a region of Europe that overlies parts of Belgium and France.
