't Groen Waterke (Green Water) in Mechelen, Belgium

In this photo you can see the "Groen Waterke" (in English Green Water) from the bridge known as "Ankerbrug" (in English Anchor Bridge). The Groen Waterke is all that remains of the Oude Melaan inlet. Duckweed carpets the surface of the water, hence the name. At the back of the photo there is a medieval building with a spire. Willem Sarens had this building erected in 1533-1544 and later on it became (among other things) a house of refuge for Saint Trond Abbey and a private house (1611-1859).It has been used by the archbishops of Mechelen-Brussels since 1926.
