In 1862, during the Peninsular Campaign (April-July 1862) of the Civil War (1863-1965), the rain had flooded the road between Yorktown and Williamsburg, Virginia. Confederates had cast trees across the roads as well. Thus, for Union troops trying to defeat the Confederates, travel was slow and difficult as pictured in this 1866 engraving.
