The genus Paphiopedilum, includes about fifty species of orchids native to tropical Malaysia, Sumatra and nearby islands. Paphiopedilum The name derives from the greek "paphia" the goddess of Paphos and Aphrodite "Pedilon" which means sandalwood, "the sandal of Aphrodite" or "slipper" because of the shape of the flower.
