Captain Nathan Hale, 1755 – 1776. American patriot. Soldier for the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. At the behest of George Washington he spied on the British in New York City. He was caught and executed. Moments before he was hung the 21 year old is reported to have said, I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country. After a 19th century engraving by A. H. Ritchie
