While in Portsmouth in 1628, George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham was stabbed to death, on August 23, at the Greyhound Pub. The assassin was John Felton, an army officer who believed he had been passed over for promotion by Buckingham. He was hanged in October of that year.
