Bifurcated uvula. Illustration of the back of a human mouth and throat, showing a bifid or bifurcated uvula (red, upper centre). This is the term for a split or cleft uvula. A bifid uvula results from incomplete fusion of the palatine shelves but it is considered only a slight form of clefting. A bifid uvula usually has lesser muscles than a normal uvula, making the patient prone to various middle ear problems.
