Common Lionfish {Pterois volitans} hovering over a coral reef. This is an introduced species in the Caribbean. Bahamas, December

Clean, isolated image of a single lionfish swimming over a coral reef in the Bahamas. Clear blue background. These fish were introduced to the Caribbean through the Panama canal from the Pacific. They are exceptional ambush predators of smaller fish, and have become well established in the Caribbean. In some areas they are actively culled by conservationists, in an effort to protect the reef. This animal was photographed in the wild, using a Nauticam underwater housing with a digital SLR and macro lens. Two flashes were used to illuminate the face of the fish.
