In Greek mythology, Aegeus was an archaic figure in the founding myth of Athens, who gave his name to the Aegean Sea and fathered Theseus, the mythical king and founder-hero of Athens. Theseus was raised on the island of Sphairia. When Theseus grew up and became a brave young man, his mother then told him his father's identity and he took the swords back to king Aegeus to claim his birthright.
