Red lichen. Lichens are symbiotic associations of a fungus (the mycobiont) with a photosynthetic partner (the photobiont or phycobiont) that can produce food for the fungus from sunlight. The photobiont is usually either green algae or cyanobacterium (blue-green algae). This lichen is growing on tree bark near the Cascada de San Rafael waterfall (images E550/0231 and E550/0232), Ecuador.
