Cartilage, light micrograph
Light micrograph of a developing spinous process of a vertebral body prior to ossification. The tissue is hyaline cartilage comprising chondrocytes and surrounding matrix stained blue. On the lateral margins, red-stained cells represent invading blood vessels and osteoblasts that will begin to synthesize bone matrix to eventually replace the cartilage. This process is called endochondral ossification. Peripheral tissue is a developing ligament and muscle. Paraffin section, haematoxylin-eosin/alcian blue stain. Magnification: x 140 when width printed at 10cm.
