Fern plant reproduction, light micrograph. At bottom, the double kidney-shaped gametophyte (prothallus) plant has anchored itself with root-like rhizoids (central black area). The prothallus includes the fertilised ovum in an area called the archegonium. The next stage, the sporophyte plant (top), has grown out of the fertilised ovum. The sporophyte root is at lower right (black). At top is a primary leaf frond (dark blue) with forked (dichotomous) veins. Magnification: x8 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
