Mire landscape of Store Mosse Nationalpark, Sweden

Store Mosse is southern Sweden's largest mire area. The term "mire sea" is no exaggeration - these are impressive vistas, reminiscent of the mountain regions. The mire Stormyren is the most ancient biotope in existence in southern Sweden. The layer of peat in the high moss itself has been built up over at least 5,000 years, and largely consists of plant remains from bog moss. Forested sand dunes, called forest dunes, form a system of islands and ridges in the open mire. Kävsjön lake, with its rich bird life, is also within the national park. Store Mosse is the most important breeding ground for cranes in southern Sweden. The foremost sights of Store Mosse are the vast mires, the bird life of Kävsjön, the cultural landscape at Svanö and Lövö, the shifting sand dunes in the mires and the view from Björnakullen and Kvarnberget hills
