Plant genetics research. Scientist mapping the genenome of eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides) in order to find genes that may be beneficial for maize (corn) crops. Eastern gamagrass is a native grass with a gene pool that has a lot of beneficial traits, including resistance to cold and insects, as well as tolerance to drought and flood. If the specific location of the genes responsible for these traits can be found, those genes may eventually be transferred into maize.
