Chalk coccolith micro-fossils, artwork. Coccoliths are individual plates of calcite crystals forming the external mineralised structure (coccosphere) of a small marine algal organism called a coccolithophore. Coccolithophores are present in huge numbers in the oceans. They form the great bulk of the chalk rocks, such as those in southern England.
