The Honorable Mrs. Graham is by Thomas Gainsborough. She was the second daughter of Charles, ninth Lord Cathcart.


Thomas Gainsborough (died 1788) was an English portrait painter and landscape artist. He was a founding member of England's Royal Academy of the Arts. Among his best known works are The Blue Boy, Portrait of Mrs. Graham, The Painter's Daughters, and Cottage Girl with Dog and Pitcher. This painting, titled The Honorable Mrs. Graham, is in the National Gallery of Scotland. Graham was the second daughter of Charles, ninth Lord Cathcart. Her husband became Lord picture was painted in 1775-1776 and locked in a London store for 50 years, but then recovered. Another portrait of the same lady shown in the dress of a housemaid, standing in a doorway with a broom, is supposed to be a rejected design for this picture, and is in the collection of the Earl of Carlisle.
