Apple canker (Nectria galligena). Longitudinal section through an apple branch (Malus 'Blenheim') infected with apple canker. The fungus has caused brown staining of the vascular system of the stem. This fungus is a serious pest of apples and pears. It causes the development of outgrowths (cankers), above which the stem eventually dies.
