Saint Alfege Greenwich, nave and galleries. Built by Nicholas Hawksmoor 1712-18.

Saint Alfege Greenwich. in the East End of London. One of the 'Fifty New Churches' or 'Queen Anne Churches'. Built by Nicholas Hawksmoor 1712-18. The design is rectangular in plan, with galleries to north and south, and a vast flat ceiling decorated with a simple plasterwork oval. This was the largest unsupported ceiling of its time. St Alfege was badly damaged by bombs in 1941; Sir Albert Richardson carried out a sensitive restoration of the interior in 1953, reinstating the galleries and pews.
