Conrad Waddington (1905-1975, with pipe), British embryologist and geneticist. Waddington's study of embryonic development led him investigate the role that genes played in regulating this development. He is best known for his ideas 'genetic assimilation', where some aquired characteristic can become inheritable via Darwinian mechanisms, and the 'epigenetic landscape' a metaphor for how development is regulated by gene regulation.
