Dappled shade 1962 Escape Tunnel crossing Berlin Border Wall poles to photograph buildings, Bernauer Strasse at Brunnenstrasse

Escape Tunnel 1962 marker stones crossing steel poles marking the line of the Berlin Border Wall and symbolising an 'iron curtain'. On 28 January 1962 28 men, women and children escaped to the West through s tunnel dug under the Wall. On 18 June 1962 East German border soldier, Reinhold Huhn was shot by West German 'escape agent', Rudolf Muller, as he confronted 22 East Berliners planning to escape through a tunnel at this location, Muller being given a 1 year suspended sentence for murder in 2000. The background photographs show East German border guard, Conrad Schuman jumping the first barbed border defence 15 August 1961, and the evolution of the border zone 1961-1989. As the border became increasingly impervious to escape, escapees resorted to tunnelling, the tunnels often being dug from West to East. Some ten escape tunnels were dug along Bernauer Strasse, where the stable ground was ideal. Three tunnels were used for escapes. The Stasi, to deter tunnel escapes, mined the border zone and dug counter tunnels to intersect escape tunnels where the guards expected them to be.
