Panorama of adaptable mezzanine space. The Lyceé, London, United Kingdom. Architect: Knox Bhavan Architects LLP, 2015.
A Grade II Listed building set within a Conservation Area this project shows how a Victorian classroom can become adaptable horizontal living for a family of four. Two adjoining flats have been knocked together to make a single large apartment. Existing internal non-structural walls and mezzanine structure have been removed to create a single fabulous double height space which flows seamlessly throughout the ground floor. The central supporting RSJ’s were reduced in height to allow a new mezzanine with usable head height to be built over the centre of the main space leaving double height space at either end. Both ground floor and mezzanine are adaptable and divisible using carefully detailed, concealed storey-height doors on both levels. The ground floor accommodates the main living areas whilst the mezzanine is an adaptable workspace, doubling up as occasional bedrooms by reconfiguring integrated moveable partitions.
