The distinctive flowers are about 3/4' long and borne in short clusters. Leaves very deeply cleft into 3-5 irregularly lobed segments and sparsely hairy in margins. Two upper petals consisting of small spur-shaped bodies raised on long claws and concealed under the helmet. Height ranged from to 1 meter high. Flowers in June and July. New York to Wisconsin and Iowa (see maps).
