Following the Battle of Lewes during the Second Barons' War on 14 May 1264, Prince Edward (1239 – 1307) and his cousin Henry of Almain were given up as hostages to Montfort. He remained in captivity until March, until 28 May, when he managed to escape his custodians and joined up with the Earl of Gloucester, who had recently defected to the King's side.
