While exploring the holds of the wreck of cargo ship Chrisoula K, I encountered this spotted porcupinefish (Diodon hystrix: 70 cms.). This species has a long body, big head, large eyes and big pectoral fins - and it seems always to have its mouth open. While the surface of the animal appears smooth, it consists of tightly fitting spiney scales. If alarmed (which this individual was not) the fish will inflate itself with water, which transforms the spiney scales into a mass of sharp 'thorns'. Parts of its body contain powerful neurotoxins: predators, including humans, beware! Egyptian Red Sea.
