A Roman Abraxas stone, 2nd - 3rd century Dark, almost black stone sprinkled with red dots, probably hematite, in a silver mounting dating from the Early Modern Age (probably 17th century). A deity with serpents for legs and a cock's head, wearing a muscled breastplate with pteryges. The left hand holding a shield, the raised right hand brandishing a whip. Magic formulae and star around the border. Beautiful example of a gnostic magic gemstone.
