Boats pass under the Sullivan s Island South Carolina swing bridge along the Intercoastal Waterway near Charleston

The 60-year-old swing bridge named the Ben Sawyer Bridge between Mount Pleasant and Sullivans Island in South Carolina. The bridge is a swinging draw-bridge which allows boat traffic to move along the Intracoastal waterway (ICW) into Charleston harbor. The bridge was built in 1945 and is a steel beam trestle style construction. The bridge was heavily damaged during Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and closed for several years. Due to the advanced age the bridge is slated for replacement but will remain a swing bridge at the request of the island residents.
