. A treatise on the culture and management of fruit trees . e cut off just above such fruitful bud. Thismethod of nailing down shoots during thesummer in order to make them productiveof fruitful buds, may be practised upon anvpart of the tree when circumstances requireit. W hen the spurs thus cut down and regu-lated agreeably to direction-, have bornefruit a proper length of time, as laid downin the instructions already given, they mustthen be cut down to the lowest bud, or en-tirely away as before, and as the case requires; 158 TREATMENT OF THE these instructions must also be attended toin every other spur, upon every part of thetree, at a similar age and state. The previous instructions are proper tobe practised upon those kinds of Pear treesthat have their spurs as far distant from eachother as Apples have, (such as the St. Ger-main, Brown Beurre, Burgamots, SwansEggs, &c.) but as some sorts as the Crasane,Chammontelle, &c. have their spurs veryrank on the branches, a different mode oftreatment is necessary. Upon such kinds Fig, twro spurs (on the same years wood) must bekept equally in a bearing condition, and thenext two be pruned down to the lowest bud,or entirely away if required, at the sametime see Fig. 10. a, a, spurs that are bear-ing, and b, b, spurs that are cut down*The bearing spurs must be allowed to beproductive for the same period, and also toretain the same quantity of fruitful buds, as PEAR TREE. 159 were directed to be done in the other kindsalready treated of as St. Germain, &c. Buta different mode of treatment from either ofthe preceding is required for the successfulmanagement of the Jargonelle Pear tree must be trained horizontally, andbe furnished with branches in the same man-ner as directed for the other kinds in theforegoing observations, only that the mainbranches must be twelve inches distant fromeach other, consequently the leading shootmust be pruned long enough for this pur-pose, which will be effected by leaving itthi
