This display is of instruments only from the German city of Bamberg, where witchcraft trials were particularly numerous, in the early 17th century, under Prince Bishop Philipp Adolf von Ehrenberg and Georg II Fuchs von Dornheim. Reading from the top, from left to right, the instruments are: gallows, for suspending the accused, sometimes with feet, or other parts of the body, supported by sharp points; stake for burning - those found guilty could be burned after being garrotted, or could be burned alive (depending upon severity of offence); Wheel, for exposure (usually after breaking the bones with the wheel); sword for beheading; the pillory; pincers, which were often used on the flesh while red-hot; a scourge, a simple rack, for stretching the body of the accused; stocks, vice for pressing and breaking fingers and thumbs, and weighted leg irons.
