Row of childrens coffin or Pips graves, St James Church, Grain.

These are the graves of 13 children who died of marsh fever. These are the Comport and Baker children. The three Bakers died at the ages of one, and the Comport children survived beyond 17 months. It was this gruesome sight that gave Charles Dickens the dramatic opening of Great Expectations where Pip startles Magwitch, the escaped convict from the prison hulk hiding among the graves.
