A brightly-colored Sally Lightfoot crab (Grapsus grapsus) skitters across the black lava rock on James Island in the Galapagos Islands (Archipiélago de Colón), a province of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of South America. The 10-legged crustacean is among the many species of wildlife that have been given protection since 1959 with the establishment of the Galapagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Foundation. Darwin is the English naturalist who made the Galapagos famous after he formulated his theory of evolution based on his visit to its 20 volcanic islands in 1835.
