Two Puss moth caterpillars, Cerura vinula, that are in their first stage of development, known as an instar, after emerging from their eggs. They are seen here on a sallow leaf which is one of their food plants. After several instars in which the caterpillar sheds it skin each time, the adult caterpillar is capable of producing formic acid to ward off predators and also has two scarlet whip-like appendages or flagellae which it is capable of extending from its twin tail.
