Islamic Centre – Nottingham 3 Curzon Street. Crescent moon is the internationally recognised symbol of Islam, similar to the Cross – Christianity, Star of David – Judaism. Back in history the crescent predates Islam by many years and was the symbol of Byzantium, which in its later incarnations became Constantinople and more recently Istanbul. It wasn’t until the rise of the Ottoman Empire that the Crescent became associated with Islam, taking the symbol for the conquered city of Constantinople in 1453. As the Ottoman Empire rules over the Muslim word for hundreds of years (arguably until the early 1920s), the symbol became synonymous with the religion.
