Glass-based material. Close-up of the structure of coated glass known as Dichroic glass. The coating is created by applying vaporized quartz crystal and metal oxides using an electron gun within a vacuum chamber. The result is glass that changes colour depending on the angle of viewing. This is a similar effect to the iridescent colours found in nature on gemstones, nacre and butterfly wings. Dichroic glass is used for jewellery, art sculptures and stained glass windows.
