An exclosure and animal proof fence set up by IPAL the Integrated Project in Arid Lands in Kargi northern Kenya East Africa Here overgrazed land has lost its top soil and is denuded of all vegetation But inside the exclosure new plants are beginning to regenerate showing that with tight control recovery of the soil is possible Note the contrast between the overgrazed land outside the fence and the recovering vegetation inside the fence In the background are some of the simple mud and wattle and corrugated iron shops dukas and other buildings of the village of Kargi
