Church spared from lava. Notre Dame des Laves church in the village of Piton Sainte-Rose on Reunion island, Indian Ocean, with a lava flow stopped at its doorway. This church only just survived the 2007 eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano that buried several houses and the local police station, prompting people to see it as divine intervention. Photographed in April 2008.
