Belmont Shore Beach and THUMS Island Chaffee, Long Beach, Los Angeles County, CA California US USA. Island Chaffee is an offshore oil production facility disguised as a palm tree clad island. It's one of four so-called THUMS man-made islands in Long Beach Harbor. When Occidental Petroleum Corporation, OXY, acquired THUMS in 2000, it retained the name derived from the original consortium of operators: Texaco, Humble, Unocal, Mobil and Shell. They are named after astronauts who died in NASA accidents (Freeman, Chaffee, White, and Grissom), and are about 10 acres each. From these island drilling platforms, constructed in the 1960s and 70s, more than 1200 oil wells have been placed. THUMS rigs were designed to blend in with the surrounding coastal environment. Drilling rigs and other above-ground equipment are camouflaged and sound-proofed, and wellheads and pipelines are located below ground to ensure that the islands enhance the appearance of both harbor and skyline.
