101st Airborne Division soldiers of the Army escort African American students, who would become known as the Little Rock Nine, into Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in September 1957 amidst extreme resistance to integration by Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus who activated the Arkansas National Guard to block any integration efforts. The Army response, initiated by President Dwight Eisenhower, was called Operation Arkansas.
