Slate quarry waste

Slate quarry waste at France's 600 year old Angers quarry. Slate is a low-grade metamorphic rock that is formed by shale heated by a few hundred degrees Celsius. It has very strong cleavage but just 10 per cent of the mined stone is of sufficient quality. The orange colour is formed by oxidised iron sulphides, which can damage thin slates.
