Orion Nebula. Artwork of the Orion Nebula by the Irish astronomer William Parsons (1800-1867), the third Earl of Rosse. This artwork was published posthumously in 1868, in Philosophical Transactions, the journal of the Royal Society of London. Lord Rosse is famous for his pioneering astronomical research, carried out using the large telescopes he built at Birr Castle, Parsonstown, Ireland. The Orion Nebula is a cloud of gas and dust where starbirth is taking place. It is located in the constellation of Orion, 1500 light years from Earth.
