Genetically modified maize research. Scientist using a microscope to analyse chromosomal variations in root tip cells from hybrid maize plants. These maize (corn, Zea mays) plants have been crossed with eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides) to improve their productivity as crop plants. Eastern gamagrass is a native grass with a gene pool that has a lot of beneficial traits, including resistance to cold and insects, as well as tolerance to drought and flood.
